What Is Worksite Wellness All About? – A Series – What Is Health Status? (Consider This!)

The field        and practice of worksite wellness today basically revolves around three terms – health, wellness and  . Other terms also seen used include: thriving, flourishing, health promotion, optimal living and quality of life. But the big three are health, wellness and

Since these terms are used interchangeably or as synonyms, I have wondered just how different or the same are these terms? When I framed out this question in my mind, I thought it would be simple enough to just look-up their definitions and I would have my answer.

But, boy was I wrong. Definitions only got me so far and not very far at that. As I was reviewing definitions, it occurred to me that worksite wellness programs today are not even necessarily about health, but more about employee health status. These two terms differ. So how do they differ? Based on the definitions and reading I have done health status is a state at a fixed point in time, as opposed to the more global, encompassing concept of health.

What Is Health Status?

The   7th Edition Medical Dictionary for the Health Professions and Nursing (2012) definition is: “The level of health of an individual person, group or population as assessed by that individual or by objective measures.”

The Oxford Illustrated Companion to Medicine (2001) defines the state of health as being the “degree to which physical and mental functioning are in equilibrium with the physical, biological and social environment.”

In his 1997 article titled Health Status Assessment, Stephen Wright uses the definition: “A focus on function and somatic sensation at a particular point in time.”

In the  Medical Dictionary (2012), the definition is: “A generic term referring to the health (good or poor) of a person, group or population in a particular area, especially when compared to other areas or with national data.”

The Medical Dictionary for the Health Professions and Nursing (2012) definition is: “The level of health of an individual person, a group, or a population as assessed by that individual or by objective measures.”

According to the U.S. National Library of Medicine, their definition is: “The level of health of the individual, group, or population as subjectively assessed by the individual or by more objective measures.”

The American Thoracic Society definitions are: “Health status is an individual’s relative level of wellness and illness by taking into account the presence of biological or physiological dysfunction, symptoms, and functional impairment. Health perceptions (or perceived health status) are subjective ratings by the affected individual of his or her health status. Some people perceive themselves as healthy despite suffering from one or more chronic diseases, while others perceive themselves as ill when no objective evidence of disease can be found.”

Rice University points out that “there is no single standard measurement of health status for individuals or population groups. Individual health status may be measured by an observer who performs an examination and rates the individual along any of several dimensions, including presence or absence of life-threatening illness, risk factors for premature death, severity of disease, and overall health. Individual health status may also be assessed by asking the person to report his/her health perceptions in the domains of interest, such as physical functioning, emotional well-being, pain or discomfort, and overall perception of health.”

On the Biology Online Website, “the level of health of the individual, group, or population as subjectively assessed by the individual or by more objective measures.” is their listed definition.

When examining and considering definitions, it is important from a conceptual perspective to remember that definitions are only part of the perspective. For conceptual clarity, one also needs to consider context and relevancy as being equally important as areas to focus on as well.

How health status is determined is an important perspective when applied in a worksite wellness setting.

Mobile pet grooming business

Starting a mobile pet grooming business requires knowledge about grooming pets and operating a business. It would be unwise to spring into this idea dog grooming without a plan of action. It would end up exploding in your face somewhere along the way.

There are online classes on dog grooming that offer techniques on grooming a pet, as well as, business start up information. Both of these skills are need to be successful. Not At Me – Tips for Presentation

Here I am at an event I am excited about. The advertised speaker and topic look so interesting. I am so looking forward to hearing her and getting that valuable information. The speaker is introduced and begins. Very soon after she starts speaking, I am bored, I check my phone, secretly hoping that an email or text has come in that will have me leave. Alas, no such message arrived and I endure 30 minutes of mind-numbing power point slides and monotone reading of her speech. She may have delivered the valuable content that was promised, but I could not receive it with her presentation.

Has this ever happened to you? Or are you afraid that this speaker will be you? It is often said that many people fear public speaking more than death. And yet, today, in our careers and as we build our businesses, we are called on more often to speak publicly.

When I was a young child, I won speech contests and dreamt of a career where I would write, travel and speak. Then, when I was in high school, I took an upper level speech class and had an embarrassing moment. I was made fun of. I dropped the class, and gave up that dream. I became a registered nurse instead. When I was working for the State of California in the High Risk Infant Follow-Up Program, I was the chairperson for a fund raising event. Here I am with hundreds of people and the master of ceremonies calls me up to the stage to acknowledge me. I turn to my boss and say, “I hate speaking in public” and walk to the stage, trip on my way up and land flat on my face. I sat up and giggled with the rest of the room, but inside I was embarrassed and said to myself “I will never speak in public again”. And that was that.

Many years later, I got over that. The embarrassment was simply holding me back from fulfilling my dreams and I went about getting myself trained to be a great public speaker. I have now spoken in front of thousands of people and consistently receive great feedback. I have also trained many speakers to be great and I want to share some ways you can enhance your presentation skills.

1. Prepare. Prepare. Prepare. Write out your speech, practice it ALOUD many times. Practice it in the mirror. Practice it aloud to another person. Preparation is not about getting every word down, or getting it perfect. Preparation allows you to be comfortable so you can speak with people and interact with them. They came to hear you, so preparation allows you to be fully you.

What Services Should Your Exhibition Contractor Offer?

When it comes to choosing an exhibition contractor you expect good quality service, outstanding support and convenience. You want your contractor to save you time, money and energy, enabling you to focus on the daily running of your business without having to worry about how the stand is doing, if everything is going to be set up on time while using valuable resources at the same time.

The first thing that all exhibition contractors should offer is a design service. They should have their own in-house team of qualified designers who can work with you to create a stand that is guaranteed to make an impact at any exhibition, trade show or event you decide to take part in. They should have extensive experience in the industry, working with a high volume of customers and showing you past projects successfully completed to give you some idea on the design creativity and innovation that you can expect moving forward.

In addition to designing the stand, exhibition contractors should also have a team of experienced and qualified engineers and carpenters who can build the stand based on the agreed design. They should use a host of materials to create the stand to the specifications provided, ensuring that you get exactly what you saw on paper, exceeding your expectations and helping you achieve success at the next event you take part in.

A good exhibition contractor will also have a team of experienced project managers who will liaise with you and the event organizers, they will also contact the venue to arrange delivery and the setting up of the booth on your behalf. This service can save you so much time and reduce the need for you to run around before the event, you can rather spend your time elsewhere, focusing on your business and driving it forward right up to when you need to man your stand.

After the event, the exhibition contractor should provide a break down service. When it comes to an innovative and creative booth, you want an experienced team of installation engineers to put it up and take it down, ensuring the stand isn’t damaged in any way during this process If you attempt taking it down yourself, if you weren’t the one to put it up, it is possible that mistakes will be made, some of these mistakes could be costly, something you want to avoid at all costs.

Further, a good exhibition contractor will provide logistic services. They will transport your stand for you to any exhibition or trade show anywhere in the world using sea, rail and air services. This means that you can attend events throughout the world, rely on your exhibition contractor to provide you with a reliable service that you can trust.

They should also provide you with a storage service. This is such a beneficial service that you should take advantage of. When it comes to storing your stand, you want to ensure that it is safe and secure and the risk of being damaged is limited. If the exhibition contractor stores it for you, you can enjoy complete peace of mind and it also reduces your need to find a storage facility and pay for it, just to keep your stand until the next event.

Physician Background Check – Do a Background Check on a Doctor

While many                people want to know if their or the person watching their children has a criminal record, there are a growing number of people who are interested in checking the background of a physician. Let’s face it, with all the physicians and dentists making their way into the headlines for malpractice, what’s to say that the next physician you choose has had to deal with malpractice in the past. The goal of a physician background check is not so much for their criminal record but to see if you should trust them with your family’s health. Unlike a person who is watching your children or handling the cash for your company, the physician needs to be trusted 100% for the simple fact that your own life is being held in their hand. The last thing you want is someone who left a medical instrument in someone’s abdominal cavity to do a surgical procedure on you.

Even with their high levels of academic achievement, the physician is still capable of breaking the law and becoming a criminal. Most hospitals no require all physicians to undergo a criminal background check prior to hiring them. Since you are hiring the physician yourself, doesn’t it also make sense that you ensure your physician is crime free and has never had to deal with a malpractice claim. That is why it is so important to perform a physician background check, you never know what your physician is hiding until you have one accomplished.

All too often you hear a story about a dentist who forcefully removes a tooth that does not need to be removed or you hear about a surgeon who left instruments inside someone’s body after stitching them up. What most people do not c is that these physicians, much like a criminal have a habit of making the same mistakes. Do you want to go to the dentist and have the wrong tooth removed or have a surgical procedure performed and the surgeon leaves the   inside you? Chances are that you would never want this to happen but yet it has happened and with some physicians it can become a habit. Protect your family and yourself by doing a background check on your physician before making the final decision as whether or not to trust the physician with your family’s livelihood.

Modern LED Devices vs. Traditional Light-Emitting Sources

Light-emitting diodes (LEDs) represent various types of semiconductor devices that produce incoherent narrow-spectrum light fascicles when powered with a steady-state voltage electrical source, producing the effect known as electroluminescence.

LEDs come in a wide variety of shapes, sizes and colors, nowadays serving for a multitude of purposes: illuminating traffic signals, railroad crossing signals and display panels, facilitating optical fiber communications, providing backlighting for LCD televisions and displays, being integrated in remote control and optical devices (infrared LEDs), or being used simply for decorative purposes (LEDs can emit light of various colors – blue, green, yellow, orange, red and purple, to name only a few).

LED lights have come a long way, today’s offer comprising highly reliable, durable and economical designs that can take various forms (LED bulbs, LED pods, LED tubes, LED displays, etc) and fulfill many different roles (functional or purely aesthetical).

LEDs are by far superior to traditional light sources such as incandescent light bulbs and fluorescent lamps, as they use less energy and produce less heat (unlike conventional light sources which consume a lot of electrical energy but transform only a fraction of the used energy into light, converting the rest of it into heat, LED lights are very economical, consuming less electrical energy and transforming a great part of it into light), have an impressively long life span (LED lights can last for more than 10 years), light up more quickly (in most cases LEDs can achieve full brightness in a matter of microseconds, compared to some fluorescent lamps that usually light up after 0,5 or 1 second and achieve full brightness in an average of 30 seconds) and can directly focus the light they emit (unlike incandescent and fluorescent light sources that generally include an external reflector that redirects the luminous rays in the desired direction).

Compared to conventional sources of light, LED bulbs and other similar LED devices can directly emit light of a certain color without the aid of color filters. Consequently, the colored light produced by LED bulbs is considerably brighter, clearer and more vivid, rendering colored-light producing LED bulbs the perfect devices for interior and exterior illumination of architectural structures, commercial panels and various decorative objects.

In addition, LED lights such as LED bulbs, LED pods and LED tubes don’t burn out unexpectedly like incandescent bulbs; when they fail, LEDs tend to dim out gradually, continuing to fulfill their purpose even in the event of a malfunction. While traditional light sources are unreliable and sometimes even unsafe (incandescent bulbs can sometimes explode due to fluctuant voltage), LED lights are durable, reliable, safe and efficient. All the mentioned advantages of LEDs render such devices the perfect replacement for incandescent and fluorescent light sources and nowadays LED light sources are already extensively used in many different industrial branches.

Latest Trends in LED Lighting

LED lights are finding wide range of applications in the field of lighting. Where ever incandescent bulbs or CFL Bulbs were in use, LED bulbs are appearing as a replacement. For all purposes of home applications various types of LED fittings and fixtures are available in the market. The headlights of the cars, motorbikes, all kinds of indication lights are of LED today

Whether it is street lighting or any type of decorative lighting, LED light fittings and LED bulbs/lights are there. Today there are a number of varieties of LED lights that are specially used for purposes like flood lights, spot lights, down lights, etc and many more. The conventional sources of lighting like fluorescent, incandescent or halogen fittings have given way to the latest LED light fittings every where.

LED lights are the most durable ones of all versions of lightings. There are no glass components or filaments in LED bulbs as in the case of incandescent lights. There are no toxins or harmful or hazardous gaseous materials in LED as in the case of CFL lights. While, the previous versions of the LED bulbs were able to produce red light of low density, today, we have LED lights with wider choices and you can purchase these in many different advanced versions too. The innovations in the field have brought in tremendous far reaching improvements.

LEDs are costlier compared to other kinds of fittings. But once we compare the performance of LED bulbs with others, LED lights wins the race.

Compare LED bulbs with incandescent or fluorescent light bulbs, you will notice that the former needs very little energy for illumination. These are highly efficient in energy consumption, which makes them pocket friendly and budget friendly too. In comparison with CFL, using LED you can save up to almost 300% of the energy consumption.

Besides, LEDs do not emit UV rays or contain any toxins too. Another mentionable advantage is that they do not get heated and stay cool despite of long hours of use. There have a longer life period. It is claimed that LED bulbs last for about 100,000 working hours. Normal lights attract insects, which does not happen when the light is LED. These have become very popular for out door lighting like landscape lighting and street lighting.

With colorful and attractive LED bulbs one can add beauty and style to the landscape, homes and buildings. There are various types of LED lights available to suit your taste and application. Whether it is inside home or outside, changing over to LED lighting will be an investment for a longer period.

Boat Lights: LED, Versus Halogen, Versus HID

LEDs have generated a lot of interest among boaters over the last several years due to their high efficiency, powerful output, and unheard of longevity infohatworld

Although early LED offerings were lacking in light quality and lumen output, rapid advancements in LED lighting technology have for all intents brought LEDs up to par and now they are considered a superior alternative to almost every other type of light source. This is not to say that traditional light sources are no longer worth consideration, but as LEDs continue to increase in quality and output, justifying the use of other lighting designs is becoming harder and harder to do. To see just how effective LEDs have become, let’s take some time to compare some performance averages across the three main types of standard boat light types.

Halogens have been a longtime favorite among boaters due to their good power and affordable purchase price. There is often some confusion as to whether or not a halogen bulb qualifies as an incandescent light source, but the basic design is the same, only halogens contain added halogen and or bromine gases. The addition of these gases causes a reaction with the tungsten filament which results in vaporized tungsten being re-deposited on the filament as the lamp is operated. This increases the longevity of the lamp and allows it to run at higher temperatures, which in turn improves the color quality and overall lumen output of the bulb. However, halogen bulbs are as we mentioned, at their core a basic incandescent design, and like all incandescent bulbs are highly inefficient and relatively short lived. Some specs for a typical 50 watt halogen bulb commonly used on boats are listed below.

17-20 lumens per watt output.

2800-3400 Kelvin color temperature.

Lamp life 1700 – 2500 hrs.

Color rendering index 100.

1,500 to 2,000 hour operating life.

Very hot operating temperature.

Fragile wire filament can break under abusive conditions.

HID-Metal Halide-

HID bulbs produce light differently from halogen or LED light sources and represent some of the most powerful types of lighting available. Most HID bulbs used onboard boats are of the metal halide variety, which produces high output combined with good color quality and good longevity. HID lights are more commonly used in spotlights due to their intense output, but also see significant use in spreader applications where larger amounts of deck area need to be covered with substantially high lumen levels. HID lights produce light by creating an arc within a glass bulb that ignites gases and metallic salts to create a plasma ignition, in turn creating intense light output. HID lights are very efficient, have good longevity, and like halogen lamps produce large amounts of heat. For applications requiring the most powerful light output possible, HID systems are at the top of the list. The following are some basic performance specs for a typical 50 watt HID bulb.

Why LED Lighting Is Not In Your Home Yet

Conventional LEDs have been used for indication and display applications for several decades. The inherent benefits of LED technology are well-known and documented, and include, maintenance and power savings, as well as performance features that are taken for granted by electronics-savvy consumers such as durability, reliability, longer life span, and consistent color and brightness levels LED Display

These benefits, combined with society’s growing environmental concerns and subsequent demand for green, energy-efficient products, have continued to drive the development of LEDs for challenging new industries and markets, such as general illumination for commercial and residential buildings. With the escalating demand for solid-state lighting, LED manufacturers are motivated to develop high-lumen LEDs while LED lighting companies are working hard to integrate the latest technology into retrofit packages and luminaries. However, new perspectives may be necessary for people to adopt LED technology as an illumination source in new installations, or incorporate LED technology in existing light fixtures.

Are LEDs suitable for commercial and residential lighting applications?

LEDs are arguably the most energy-efficient light source available. Case in point, LEDs have created upwards of 80 percent energy savings in the traffic signal industry. However, in this application, the LEDs had two natural advantages:

1. LEDs are monochromatic, so almost all of the light generated is used. In contrast, the white light generated by an incandescent bulb needs to transmit through a colored filter. Light outside of the frequency of the colored lens is wasted.

2. LEDs are directional, so almost all of the light generated was emitted towards the lens. In contrast, light from an incandescent bulb needed to be reflected toward the lens, resulting in loss of efficiency.

Commercial and residential lighting applications stand to gain similar, if not more, energy-savings by converting to LEDs. However, most applications are not as straight-forward as stuffing a PC board with a bunch of directional red, amber or green LEDs. LED light fixtures and retrofit packages have to be designed to distribute the directional light generated by the LED over wide areas. Moreover, white LED technology, while continuously improving, does not yet have the optical color and brightness that consumers have become accustomed to with incandescent lights. However, the power savings can be significant, for example, in California the energy commission has adopted efficiency standards for residential and commercial buildings. These standards, Title 24, have accelerated development of LED illumination technology.

Why LEDs are not in your house?

Unlike incandescent bulbs, high-power LEDs cannot be simply plugged into a wall socket. Several companies are working to overcome the technological and economic challenges by developing LED light fixtures and retrofit LED lighting products using high-power LEDs. Thermal management, complex drive circuitry, optics, and packaging are challenging hurdles for developers to contend with. There are also educational barriers to overcome in the development of commercial LED illumination products. Getting users to adopt new types of fixtures, understand the illumination characteristics of LEDs, choose the appropriate viewing angle for a given application, select the appropriate intensity for a given application, and understand the limitations of LED color temperatures are pivotal to developing the market for LED technology in commercial and residential lighting.

Thermal Challenges

For the past couple of centuries, traditional luminaries have consisted of a light bulb and lamp socket that enables consumers to continually replace bulbs that have burned out. Whether it is an incandescent, compact fluorescent or fluorescent light bulb, it will simply screw or drop into an industry-standard socket and the luminary will continue to be operational. A few LED lighting companies have developed high-flux LED bulbs that retrofit into existing sockets; but this approach is less than ideal. For example, a traditional light bulb socket provides a very poor thermal path for cooling an LED light source. Incandescent light bulbs are basically heaters that produces visible light, and the socket it is screwed into is designed to protect the lamp base and wiring from that heat. With high-power LEDs, most of the wattage consumed is converted to heat and, if it can’t be dissipated through the lamp socket, will dramatically shorten the LED life.
